Happy Endings
Rat Rescue and Retirement

About Us

Happy Endings is a small, independent rescue located in Columbia City, Indiana. Most of the rats at Happy Endings are here for the remainder of their lives. Because of this, space and resources may become limited. Please see our wish list if you would like to make a donation or sponsor a rat! We do not like to turn any rat away, but please understand that we can only take in as many as space will allow! Our rescue is currently full at 21 rats, 4 mice. All our residents enjoy:

roomy cages
daily handling and playtime
nutritional diet, including fresh foods daily
veterinary care and/or medication as needed
lots and lots of TLC!

If you have a rat in need of a loving, forever home please contact Heather.

1/24/04 Macy got 3 new sisters today and is sooo happy to have friends to cuddle with again!

1/10/04 We lost our beautiful little mouse Maya today. She was the mother of Macy and will be missed very much by her little girl and by all of us at Happy Endings.

12/30/03 Duncun visited the vet today for a possible inner ear infection. Much to his dismay, he will have to be on meds for a while.

11/9/03 Today our two foster boys went home with their new parents, Katie and Mark Newton! They will be missed but we know they are going to be very happy in their new home!!!

10/27/03 Happy Endings lost a very sweet resident today. Faith had had respiratory disease since she came to us and though she had been on antibiotics, the disease finally took its toll on this sweet girl. We will miss her very much.

10/21/03 Happy Endings had another visitor, Carly Myers, who now sponsors 4 rats! Thank you! Carly also transported 4 baby rats to Happy Endings, 2 of which are being fostered until their new parents can take them home.

9/29/03 Phoebe had her stitches removed (much to her disapproval) and is doing great!!!

9/21/03 We had two visitors here at Happy Endings, Katie and Mark Newton, who now sponsor 7 rats! Thanks guys!

9/19/03 Phoebe had surgery to remove a mammary tumor and a leg tumor. She is recovering nicely and is already back to her old, outgoing self! She will have her stitches removed on 9/29.

9/15/03 Phoebe had a vet appointment to determine whether or not surgery for her two large tumors would benefit her or not. It was decided that the surgery would be done the following Friday.

Rainbow Bridge

Why Rats Are Only With Us a Short While

One day, some angels went to God and asked if they might spend some time on Earth, to learn and perhaps to teach. He answered that some of the people might be frightened of the angels, that His children's idea of beauty might not be His own. The angels replied that maybe those who could look past the differences deserved the blessings that they could give. But God was still concerned. The angels needed Heaven's air to breathe; they would suffocate down on Earth. The angels promised to hold their breath as long as possible, and would return when they could not hold it anymore. God agreed and sent down the angels.

Many people were frightened of these creatures, despised them, and tried to kill them in large numbers. However, the few who recognized the angelic qualities in the beings took them in and sheltered and fed them. In return, they received more joy and laughter then they could possibly imagine. But alas, soon the angels could hold their breath no longer. After just a short Earth time, they left to go back to Heaven. But they were sure to tell the next group of angels exactly who to seek out when they went down.

~Author Unknown~

Angels
These angels don't strum golden harps
Have long white gowns to wear
They don't show themselves in visions
But we know that they are there
These angels don't wear halos
Or fly on feathered wings
They may not sleep on cotton clouds
They just don't need those things
These angels are all around us
In every breath we take
They're in the falling autumn leaves
In the ripples on the lake
These angels once had silky fur
And prickly little tails
They gave licky kisses with tiny tongues
Had scratchy little nails
These angels always made us smile
They could melt a heart of stone
One look at tiny angel eyes
And we never felt alone
These angels are still with us
Still twitching little noses
You see them in the sunset
And the beauty of the roses.

Remembering Our Kitty Friends

Free
Adoring eyes, contented purr
Twitching tail and fluffy fur
Softly rolling through the sky
Making clouds float slowly by

Whiskers whisper past my face
playfully and full of grace
You bat my hair with pie-dough paws
You grab my clothes with clingy claws

You brush my leg, you pounce and play
Frolicking throughout the day
Then at night you stretch and yawn
Reminding me that you're not gone

With every blade of grass you blow
You're only wanting me to know
Each dancing leaf , each swaying tree
You're telling me that you are free
